Abstract:
Accelerating cloud native environments such as microservices and function-as-a-service (FaaS) is a multi-dimensional problem that requires the combination of multiple improvements. On the hardware side, it is important to have appropriate computer architectures; on the software side, techniques to reduce cold-start effects and costly storage accesses are required. Furthermore, new energy-efficiency frameworks are needed. This talk will describe some of the new techniques that my group has recently developed and evaluated.
Biography:
Josep Torrellas is the Saburo Muroga Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). His research interests are computer architectures for shared-memory multiprocessors and parallel computing. Some of his contributions include thread-level speculation (TLS) architectures, the Bulk Multiprocessor concept, deterministic record and replay mechanisms, process variation mitigation techniques, and hardware defenses against speculative execution attacks.(https://iacoma.cs.uiuc.edu/josep/torrellas.html)
