Educational Background
● 1988: Bachelor’s degree in Optical Instruments from Tsinghua University.
● 1991: Master’s degree in Optics from the University of Science and Technology of China.
● 1997: Ph.D. in Image Processing from the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
From 1991 to 1994, he served as a teaching assistant at the Beijing Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China. Since 1997, he has been teaching at the Information Science Center of the School of Information Science and Technology, Peking University. He has been a professor since 2005.
Main Research Areas
His main research areas include image, video processing and understanding, and multimedia technology. He has published over 150 papers, with nearly 50 CCF-A papers and 7 ESI highly cited papers.
His major research projects include image classification research, image retrieval research, image compression research, and he teaches courses such as "Digital Video Processing", "Image Understanding", and "Computer Vision".
Main Research Projects
To date, he has supervised 7 PhD graduates, 5 of whom have received the Top Ten Academic Awards from the School of Information Science. Dr. Luo Yong received the CCF Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, Dr. Geng Bo and Dr. Xu Chang received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from Peking University. After graduating, Dr. Geng Bo worked at Microsoft headquarters for two years before returning to China to start a business. Dr. Xu Chang secured a faculty position at the University of Sydney immediately after graduation.
Major Awards
He has received several awards including the Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class), the Chen Xianzi Outstanding Teaching Award, the General Electric Award, and the Kodak Award. His research on wavelet image compression systems was recognized as a key achievement of the National 863 Project and the 211 Project, and has been applied to high-speed imaging systems in the aerospace field and digital cinema playback systems. In recent years, his research on multi-view and multi-label learning in image understanding has been recognized as a key achievement of the National 973 Project.
Main Academic Positions
Professor Xu Chao is a member of the Intelligent Information Processing Industry Branch of the China High-Tech Industrialization Research Association, a review expert for the National Natural Science Foundation, the Aerospace Foundation, and the Ministry of Science and Technology projects, a national science and technology award review expert, and a member of international societies such as IEEE, ACM, and AAAI.
